I love digging into the past and reading up on history and heritage. That's a big reason why I love adidas too, it's known as the world's first sports brand and its heritage across a variety of sports is huge.
But aside from gearing up legendary athletes like Nadia Comaneci, Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rod Laver, adidas also made a name for itself in the sneaker game. They didn't mean to, but it just happened thanks to the 1980s hip-hop group Run DMC. They wrote the popular "My adidas" song and suited up in the striped tracksuits and Superstars. Soon enough, everyone in the USA had a pair of those shell-toes. adidas finally discovered what Run DMC was doing and how great their influence was, and the rest is history. Now, the adidas Originals Superstars enjoy the status of being the most popular adidas sneakers of all-time.
Solecollector has the full article on how the tie-up happened, as told by Run DMC themselves. Read it here: http://solecollector.com/news/this-history-of-run-d-m-c-and-adidas-as-told-by-d-m-c-/?utm_campaign=solecollector+02+2014&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social%25253Fuid%25253D207284&s=1.
Another good article on Solecollector that I came across was their list of the Top 10 Best Partnerships Between Rappers and Sneaker Companies. It's obvious that the adidas x Run DMC would end up on top. It's also good to see that adidas x Snoop Dogg made it to #3 and at #2 is actually Kanye x Nike, but as you probably know by now, Kanye's moved on and is with the 3-stripes.
It's safe to say that adidas is the leader in the Sneaker Game so far. They're not resting on their laurels though, as they've signed some more big names recently like Nigo and Rita Ora, adding to an already stellar cast in their partnerships line-up.
Rumor has it that another musician, Pharrell Williams, will be joining the brand too. But after his recent number in the Oscars where he donned an adidas tracktop and kicks, I have a feeling that rumor will be confirmed soon...
